U16 CAS Rugby Team Results

In great weather 8 teams contested the NSWSRU 16s Championships and selection trials at Curagul Field. The CAS team had a very tough draw playing the very big and skilled CCC team. An early defensive lapse allowed and well executed try from CCC to see them take the lead that they would not relinquish. CCC would go on to win the tournament.

CCC 17 (L. Hutchinson-Walters, T.Giles tries, L. Hutchinson-Walters 2 con, L. Hutchinson-Walters pen)

CAS 5 (J. Cameron try)

In the second game of the day CAS faced GPS (B). A much more committed effort from the team saw the scored tied at 5 all at half time. After the break the team came out firing and scored all of the points in the second half to run out winners.

CAS 24 (W. Kablau, T. Constable, S. Rechner, M. Hawkes tries, L. Vass 2 con)

Pres XV B 5 (J. Jones try)

The second day saw CAS contesting the Bowl Final against ISA (II). After starting poorly in the first game to boys were determined not to make the same mistake twice and to try and ensure that their names were placed in front of the selectors for positions in the NSW Schools team. A dominate display was put on show with ISA suffering a heavy defeat by the boys in red.

NSWSRU Life Member’s Shield:

CAS 58 (S Kennedy, O. Hughes, J. Cameron, A. Pakutoa, S. Rechner, K. Galloway (3), J. McNeill, D. Breden tries, B. Pollack (2), L. Vass (2) con)

ISA II 5 (H. Scott tries).

The NSWSRU U16 teams will be announced on Wednesday 5 July after the annual meeting between Schools, NSW Country and Sydney Juniors.

NSW Schools Rugby committee understands that this may cause an issue with travel plans and understands if any student withdraws their availability. This is due this year to the ARU and their change of the 16s structure and also whilst waiting for Sydney Juniors to complete their regional trials and announce their team next weekend.

Players selected will be contacted on the Wednesday by the managers of the teams. The teams will be posted on the website as well. Good luck to all with selections.

CAS Open Rugby Teams Continue on their Winning Way

The 1sts and 2nds Opens Rugby teams continued on their winning way today at the NSWSRU selection trials.

In the first game CAS 2nds were behind early against a very large CCC team. 7 nil after 5 minutes it looked like it was going to be a tough day, however the superior skills and fitness of the CAS team started to shine through and at half time CAS had gone to the lead.  In the second half it was all one way traffic with CAS bottling up the CCC attack and becoming more and more dominate in the scrum and lineout. The final score of 40-7 was a testament to the work the players have put into their training this year.

CAS 40 Tries L Wallace (W) x2, S Rahme (A), H Whiteman (W), P Flaherty (A), D Garing (K), Con T Woodcock (K) x 5

CCC Try J Delailoa Con M Zakhia

In the 1st game the boys knew they were in for a very tough contest. CAS opened the scoring but ISA were not to be denied and hit back tying the game at 7 all. The scrums were a battle all game with both front rowers working hard all game to gain the upper hand however no team really gained it. In general play the CAS backline started to get on top and the tries started to follow. 3 tries in the 2nd half saw CAS pull away finishing the game 28-7 winners.

CAS 28 Tries N Frost (K), M Stead (T), B Donaldson (W), L Ilias (T), Con B Donaldson (W) x4

ISA 7 Try H Ward, J Sidery

In 2nds an arm wrestle of game saw the lead change 5 times with each team scoring 5 tries. The game went right down to the wire with CAS coming back in the final minutes to tie the game. The team then held it nerve and repelled the GPS attack and denied then the opportunity to score.

GPS Tries C Baker (S) x2 T Yassmin (S) x2 Con D Easy (I) x3

The 1st game was an extremely tight affair in the first half with the scores remaining 0 all at halftime. Defence was the order of the day during the first half with brutal tackles coming from players on both teams. In the second half CAS came out firing and they broke open the GPS defence with a quick succession of 3 tries.

Defence was then the order of the day again for a large part of the rest of the half until and final try was scored by CAS to round out the game. GPS fought back but could not breach the CAS defensive wall and the score finished at 26 to 0 at fulltime.

CIS Touch Football Trials

The CAS under 15s team began the day as strangers from three different schools and ended it as the champions of the under 15s inter association touch gala day. With minimal subs and games back to back the resilience and hard work payed off winning 5 out of there 6 games.

Some highlights from the day included some fantastic combinations from the Trinity Grammar students Riley Large, Ky Willoughby, Blake Toohey and Zak Balzan. St Aloysius colleges Braith Alexander was excellent not only in defense but directional play.

Waverley Colleges Finn Filepek showed some excellence speed and agility scoring some great tries from mid field. The finishing from Daniel Besgrove was exceptional with some amazing diving tries. Riley Fitzroy’s speed is second to none again finishing off some great tries. The leadership, teamwork and overall ability of this team was exceptional to not only coach but also to see this put into practice. Winning 8-0 against the NCIS and CSSA teams shows just how talented this CAS team is.

As coach of this team the stand out performance was from Trinity Grammars Riley Large who continually found the energy to grind during defense and produced some amazing attacking plays to ensure a CAS victory.

Congratulation to the boys on their outstanding effort not only winning the competition but also on the selection of Ky Willoughby, Riley Large, Blake Toohey, Braith Alexander and Daniel Besgrove into the CIS representative team. These young men should be commended on an outstanding performance throughout the day and their selection into a very competitive team.
